Cephalotus follicularis Labill TC

Cephalotus follicularis Labill.

Also known as the Australian Pitcher Plant, Cephalotus follicularis is a fascinating carnivorous plant prized for its small, intricately formed pitchers and compact growth habit. Native to southwestern Australia, this species produces beautiful ground-level pitchers that can develop rich coloration when given plenty of light.

This is a great choice for carnivorous plant collectors who want something a little different from the typical Venus flytrap or Nepenthes.

🌱 Plant: Cephalotus follicularis Labill.
🪴 Type: Carnivorous plant
🌏 Native to: Southwestern Australia
🍃 Growth: Compact, rosette-forming

Care

💡 Light:
Provide bright light with several hours of direct sunlight each day. Strong light helps encourage compact growth and better pitcher coloration. If growing indoors, a quality grow light works very well.

💧 Water:
Use distilled water, reverse-osmosis (RO) water, or rainwater. Avoid regular tap water, as mineral buildup can damage the plant.

Cephalotus generally prefers to be moist but not constantly waterlogged. Keeping the pot sitting in a shallow amount of water can work, but allowing the plant to dry slightly between waterings is often preferable to keeping it saturated continuously.

🌱 Soil:
Use a nutrient-free, acidic carnivorous plant mix. A combination of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite works well. Do not use standard potting soil or mixes containing fertilizer.

🌡️ Temperature:
Cephalotus prefers moderate temperatures and appreciates a noticeable day/night temperature difference. Protect it from extreme heat and freezing temperatures.

💨 Humidity:
Average household humidity is generally acceptable as long as the plant receives good airflow. Extremely high humidity without air circulation can encourage fungal problems.

🍽️ Feeding:
Cephalotus obtains nutrients from insects caught in its pitchers. You do not need to feed it regularly. If grown indoors without access to insects, an occasional appropriately sized insect can be offered. Do not fertilize the soil.

🪴 Repotting:
Repot infrequently and handle the roots as little as possible. Cephalotus can be sensitive to root disturbance. Repot when the growing medium has broken down or the plant has clearly outgrown its container.

Important Notes

Cephalotus can be somewhat slower-growing and less forgiving than some beginner carnivorous plants. Avoid constantly changing its growing conditions, overwatering, or exposing it to mineral-heavy water.

Never use tap water unless you have confirmed that its mineral/TDS level is safe for carnivorous plants.

As with all plants, appearance and size may vary. Minor pitcher damage or changes in pitchers can occur naturally during shipping and acclimation.
